’18 Green’ for junior referees continues in 2025

Posted on March 27, 2025
Nepean Football Association and Nepean Referees Group have confirmed that the ’18 Green’ initiative, which focuses on raising awareness about the crucial role our referees play in grassroots football, will continue in 2025.

The initiative, which was piloted in 2024, sees junior referees wear a green band around their sleeve or sock and serves as a reminder for players, team officials and spectators that the referee is a junior referee.  By fostering a culture of respect and protecting our referees from undue stress and negativity, it creates an environment where referees feel valued and supported.

“After the implementation of the 18 Green initiative in 2024, we have seen a dramatic reduction in incidents involving our junior referees”, said Nepean Referees Group President, Nathan Marland.

“Our member clubs have been extremely supportive of the program”.

Supported via social media and A-Frame posters at each ground, the initiative was so well-received that it has this year been extended to include armbands for cadet referees, who are the next generation of match officials.  The armband for cadets will be green with an orange band through the middle.

“While there is still work to do, we are very happy with the community response. Coupled with Nepean Football Association’s introduction of the ‘three strike’ policy, we are seeing some real change in attitudes and behaviour toward our match officials, which can only be positive for recruiting and retaining our referees”, he said.
