Nepean Referees Group held its first training session for Cadet Referees on Saturday 15 March 2025 at Jamison Park. Led by senior referees, over 50 up-and-coming referees were taken through some fundamentals of the game.
Covering three stations, the next generation of junior referees, some of whom will start their journey as cadet referees in 2025, were taught the basics of positioning, drop ball, whistle use, throw ins, fouls and handball. Importantly, they were also provided techniques to ensure they are supported on game day and how to effectively deal with difficult behaviour from team officials and spectators.
“It was a great way to get these kids ready for season ahead”, said NRG Vice President, Phil Macdonald.
The overall level of engagement and feedback was very positive with participants and parents asking questions across the course of session. Several clubs have also acknowledged the value of the sessions.
“I think what we will see is a group of young referees who will feel a lot more confident knowing how to handle situations out on the field” he said. “That level of confidence would probably take a lot longer to build up without sessions like these.”
Cadet referees are organised by individual clubs. If you are interested in finding out more on how to become a cadet referee, please reach out to a Committee member of your club at the grounds or via their Facebook page.
